Animaniacs Grand Prix is a cancelled racing game originally pitched by Data Design Interactive to Warner Bros. in 1998 for Windows, based on the television series Animaniacs. The game would've seen characters from Animaniacs compete in a racing competition.[1]

Data Design Interactive had originally pitched an Animaniacs racing game to Warner Bros. around April 15, 1998 and April 22, 1998. It is assumed Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment had rejected the pitch as development had never commenced, and no known promotions of the title exist.

The game had remained unknown to the public until 2020, where the preservation community Hidden Palace discovered documents from Data Design Interactive, with several unheard titles being discovered, including Animaniacs Grand Prix.

Overview[]

Details of Animaniacs Grand Prix are rather scarce. Design documents for the game mentioning Animaniacs Grand Prix intended to "redefine" the cart-racing genre of games, similar to Nintendo's Mario Kart. The game would've been presented in 3D and would've contained detailed animation for the characters, such as different actions when reaching different rank standings. All characters would've had unique statuses and could hold two to three weapons to store and use anytime.

Written in the game's story, each of the Animaniacs characters gather around to participate in the annual carting grand prix, each with their own personal goals and reasons. The winners for each race get different prizes. For racers finishing second and third place, the character would receive an unbelievable amount of money; while first place racers will get one achievable wish.

Stock character artwork featured within the design documents include Yakko, Wakko and Dot prominently, though Pinky, The Brain, Dr. Scratchansniff, Hello Nurse, Squit, Bobby, Pesto, Slappy Squirrel, Rita and Runt are seen, implying they may have been intended to be playable characters.

While no direct screenshots of the game exist, a screenshot of the title screen and design documents used in the pitch exist to the public.

Trivia[]

  • Alongside Animaniacs Grand Prix being found within Data Design Interactive's design documents, a nearly-identical design document featuring characters from The Simpsons in place of the Animaniacs brand elements was also discovered.
