Cartoon Network (abbreviated as CN, corporately known as The Cartoon Network, Inc.) is an American cable television network created by Turner Broadcasting (now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery as a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery Networks) which primarily shows animated programming. It originally served as a 24-hour outlet for classic animation properties from the Turner Broadcasting libraries and is mainly youth-oriented, but shares channel space with a late-night adult oriented channel programming block called [adult swim]. and a morning preschool block called Cartoonito.

Network logo used from the channel's launch until 2004, it has since been relegated to ending credit animations and merchandise.

Beginning on March 27, 2023, a new Canadian feed of the channel replaced Teletoon, and is owned by Corus Entertainment under license from Warner Bros. Discovery. The channel will maintain airings of the Animaniacs reboot (including the Canadian broadcast debut of the final season).[1] The final season debuted on April 7, with an airing of episode 27.[2]

History With The Animaniacs Franchise[]

Animaniacs on Cartoon Network

United States[]

Animaniacs aired a special two-hour marathon on Cartoon Network on January 31, 1997. Pinky and the Brain also aired a special two-hour marathon on February 7, 1997. This would mark the only time that the spin-off aired on the US feed of the channel.[3]. Eventually, Animaniacs joined the channel's regular schedule and aired there from August 30, 1998 to August 24, 2001; after which the show moved to Nickelodeon. Despite this, the channel held on to the broadcast rights to Wakko's Wish, occasionally airing it well into the later 2000's and early 2010's [4] before The Hub Network acquired the broadcast rights. During the show's run on Cartoon Network, newly-animated commercial bumpers featuring the characters, animated by Primal Screen, were often used. During the Powerhouse era, Raymond Scott's song of the same name was also utilized in promos for the shows, often times being combined with their theme songs.

The theme songs of both Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain were included on Cartoon Network's 1999 "Cartoon Medley" album.

Internationally, the series and its movie continued to air on Cartoon Network and its sister channel Boomerang for a longer period of time than in the US along with Pinky and the Brain, and Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain (the latter of which hasn't yet aired on US Cartoon Network or Boomerang).

Latin America[]

In Latin America, Pinky and the Brain joined Cartoon Network's regular schedule on August 1, 1998 with a marathon on the Super Chunk block; as well Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain later on August 6, 2000. Reruns of both shows lasted until December 23, 2007. The first show, as well Animaniacs, aired for a limited time on the channel's 25th anniversary event, between April 23-27, 2018.

Later on 2021, The Animaniacs reboot started streaming on HBO Max with Cartoon Network branding in some promotional material. One example of this practice occurred in a poll on the streaming channel's official Instagram story on June 17, 2021 (pictured in the gallery below). Later that year on September 26, the reboot aired on Cartoon Network in Latin America during an HBO Max promotion. [5] The pre-reboot productions also stream on HBO Max LA with Cartoon Network branding. In May 2023, the reboot began airing regularly on the channel, with the final season due to debut concurrently on Cartoon Network and HBO Max in June 2023.[6] The first episode will premiere on CN the same day as the HBO Max launch on Friday June 30, with one episode debuting each Friday afterwards. [7]

Canada[]

On March 27, 2023, Cartoon Network Canada's original feed was taken over by Boomerang, while Teletoon's feed was converted into a new feed for CN. Reruns of the Animaniacs reboot moved to the newly converted CN channel from Teletoon as well, with the final season later debuting on April 7.[2]

Trivia[]

  • As of 2021, the Latin American feed of Cartoon Network has aired at least one episode of every Animaniacs-related TV series; which includes Animaniacs (1993), Pinky and the Brain (1995), Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain (1998), and Animaniacs (2020).

Censorship on Cartoon Network Latin America[]

  • In May 2023, episodes 8 and 10 of the Animaniacs reboot were skipped entirely by the channel. While unconfirmed, it is speculated that the joke in "WhoDonut" implying that Yakko and Dot are bisexual was why episode 8 was omitted. In regards to episode 10, it is speculated that the controversial "Anima-Nyet" segment making fun of Russian president Vladimir Putin (and very briefly Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro) is the reason why the episode was skipped.[6]
  • Episode 1 of the reboot was also apparently censored.

Promotional Campaign with HBO Max[]
This promotion was uploaded to the social media pages of Cartoon Network Brasil on July 4, 2022, to advertise the show's HBO Max LA debut. Interestingly, these advertisements use Pinky and Brain's designs from the 2020 Animaniacs reboot rather than their original designs.
