Plot[]

In 19th-century England, Pinky and The Brain accept a challenge to circle the globe in 79 days in order to gain a foothold in a club with connections to the British Empire and then conquer the world. Throughout their journey, the duo encounter frequent mishaps in different nations which hinder their progress.

Crew[]

Trivia[]

  • Sir Sidney is a caricature of British-American actor Sydney Greenstreet, who quotes his "by gad, sir" catchphrase from the 1941 film adaptation of The Maltese Falcon.
  • When Sir Sidney describes the mice as "royalty", he imagines Brain dressed as Queen Victoria and Pinky as King Charles III.
  • The "duck and a hose" exchange from "Win Big" is briefly referenced by Sir Niles and Sir Sydney.
  • The music that plays during Western chase sequence parodies the theme music of the 1960 Western film The Magnificent Seven, which was originally composed by Elmer Bernstein.
  • Near the end of the cartoon, Pinky and the Brain join "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" to travel east. In the late-19th century and early-20th century, this circus was the most famous of the traveling Western-themed circuses and hosted "Cowboys and Indians" acts.
  • At the end of the episode, Benjamin Disraeli is declared President of the Pompous Explorers' Club. Disraeli already served a term as Prime Minister in 1868 (as the episode is set in 1872), but he would go on to serve as PM again from 1874 - 1880.

Allusions to Around the World in 80 Days[]

  • The title and plot are a parody of Jules Verne’s 1872 novel Around the World in 80 Days. Additionally, the year in which this episode supposedly takes place (1872) is the year in which the original book was first published.
  • The Pompous Explorers' Club is a parody of the Reform Club.
  • The character of Phineas Fogg is based off-of David Niven's portrayal of Phileas Fogg in the 1956 film adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days.
  • The mice begin their journey in a hot-air balloon, just as Fogg and Jean Passepartout did in the movie. The music that plays during this scene parodies the film's theme, which was originally composed by Victor Young.

Goofs[]

  • At the beginning of the episode, there are only three club members in the room. But before Brain enters, the room is suddenly filled with several members.
  • When the mice are attacked by the Italians, Pinky's eyes briefly turn pink and resemble Brain's own eyes.
