A Legendary Tail/Project BRAIN is the 64th and penultimate episode of the Pinky and the Brain spin-off series and the 6th episode of the show's 4th season. It originally aired on September 28, 1998. Both cartoons in this episode are animated by Rough Draft.
A Legendary Tail[]
Plot[]
The Brain generates a tall-tale about himself to make him seem like a folk-hero in the eyes of the public. The folk-tale chronicles the adventures of Big Johnny Brain Jones Peachpit Bill Boon Crockett and his sidekick Little Pinky Flea Pie Waffle Shoe Clamhead Chris, as they set-out to achieve fame for their heroism.
Crew[]
- Written By Charles M. Howell IV, Earl Kress, and Jed Spingarn
- Directed By Nelson Recinos
Songs[]
Trivia[]
- Brain's plan in this episode utilizes computer-generated writing to complete his tall tale, which ultimately proves to be its downfall as the computer-generated writing is too logical to complete a coherent story. 24 years since this episode's debut, AI-generated writing has become more common, with programs such as ChatGPT being able to generate entire stories. These programs have come under criticisms for flawed, overly-logical writing (much like Brain's tall tale), as well as enforcing the threat of displacing actual human writers.
- Ironically, scripts from both "A Legendary Tail" and its sister segment were among the many Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs scripts unethically used to train AI programs in 2024.[1]
- A scene of Pinky observing Brain typing has become a popular internet GIF.
- The ending chorus calls Brain "Big Johnny Brain Jones Peachpit Bill Boone Crockett" after his tall tale.

Barring the occasional reference in Elmyra, Wakko's Wish and some video game appearances; ACME Labs would not return in its traditional form in a Pinky and the Brain-related TV series until the 2020 Animaniacs reboot.
