Hades (most commonly known as "Hell") is the place of eternal suffering and punishment that unrighteous souls are sent to upon their demise, as outlined in various religions. It is lead by the prince of darkness, Satan, and has made sporadic appearances throughout the Animaniacs franchise.

Appearance[]

Hades is usually depicted as a red-and-orange fiery wasteland with pools of lava and bottomless pits found all-throughout. Additional sections include a lounge-type area, the Mile-Down Stadium, the River Styx which leads to Purgatory, and various torture rooms (one of which contains "whiny protest songs from the 60s"). In "Warners Unbound," it is depicted as being predominantly purple-coded rather than the usual red and orange.

Animaniacs (2020)[]

Hades is first seen in the Animaniacs reboot in the cartoon "Warners Unbound" when the Warners send Odysseus and his crew there to torment them. Unfortunately, Odysseus sees it more as fun, likening it to the competition show Aegean Ninja Warrior. He then gleefully "competes" in various tortures before the Warners remove him from there to face real torture.

Next, in "Gold Meddlers," Nils Niedhart plummets down into Hell after the weight of his gold medals causes the ground to collapse. A group of demon judges score his drop with a perfect 10. Then in "Pinko and the Brain," Brain responds to Pinky's inquiry to make a cake for Brie with serving her a "Devil's food cake," with the intention of metaphorically putting her through "Hell" (this is one of the first times Hades is referred to as "Hell" without being cut-off).

Hell later appears in "Hindenburg Cola," where Nils initially reveals that he escaped it (after Wakko gleefully says "I thought you were in Hell!"). Nils later plummets back to Hell once more at the end of the cartoon, and his fall is judged by the demon judges again. A point is deducted by one of them for overreliance on "meta humor."

Trivia[]

  • When referred to as "Hell," this is one of the few times a swear word can be heard uncut in an Animaniacs production.
