Meet John Brain/Smell Ya Later is the 58th episode of the original Animaniacs. It originally aired on February 28, 1994.

Oh, Oh, Ethel

Animation by StarToons

58-OhOhEthel

Plot

An advertisement for a new one-woman show starring Slappy Squirrel called "Oh, Oh, Ethel" is shown. However, Slappy becomes discouraged when she finds out the show is a tribute to Ethel Merman and not Ethel Mertz like she originally thought.

Inkblot Test

Animation by StarToons

Inkblot cover

Plot

Yakko is in a session with Dr. Scratchansniff. Scratchy shows Yakko some ink blot tests but all Yakko sees is girls. However, the fourth test reminds him of the next cartoon.

Trivia

  • The inkblot test is a parody of the Rorschach test.
  • This cartoon marks another instance where the show got away with saying "sexy" (This previously happened in "The Big Kiss")
  • Around 2020-2021, this particular cartoon became an internet meme of sorts where instead of answering "girls", Yakko answers "Amogus" (a reference to the video game Among Us). The meme became popular enough for Rob Paulsen to redub the segment with references to the meme for Esports Arena; which hosts his Talkin' Toons program.

Meet John Brain

Animation by StarToons

58-1-MeetJohnBrain

Plot

Pinky and the Brain play the political game when "John Brain" runs for President of the United States. Brain's obvious comments about being a mouse goes over the public's head as his campaign is met with surprising success, and the public praises him. Unfortunately, it all comes crumbling down when Brain makes his first public in-person appearance. The public is disgusted that he is in fact, an actual mouse.

Crew

Trivia

  • This is one of the few Pinky and the Brain cartoons where StarToons handled the animation. They would later animate "The Brain's Apprentice" in episode 94, as well as provide storyboarding and sheet-timing for the spin-off series cartoon "Brainania."
  • Larry Kling is a caricature of Larry King.
  • Suzanne Slimmers and her Thighmonster parody Suzanne Somers's real-life endorsement of the Thighmaster.
  • Additional media figures parodied in this cartoon were Wolf Blitzer & Barbara Walters.
  • Yakko makes a cameo appearance as a silent reporter during one of Brain's press conferences.
  • Admiral Pinky is a reference to Ross Perot's running mate, Admiral James Stockdale. Additionally, Pinky's "What am I doing here?" spoofs Stockdale's "Who am I? What am I doing here?" quote used to open the 1992 Vice Presidential debates.
    • The clip of Pinky saying, "NARF! Ahehehehehehehehehe, what'm I doin' here?" was used in the intro for Rob Paulsen's podcast, Talkin' Toons.
  • The tomato splatter behind Brain, resembles one of the ten Rorschach blots (just spoofed in the segment before this one).
  • This is the final Pinky and the Brain cartoon to use the TMS version of their theme song. Their last five Animaniacs cartoons (expect for "Hercules Unwound") would use the Wang version of their theme song.
  • At the end of this cartoon, it is revealed that Chicken Boo is also running for president and was primed to take Brain's place as the popular candidate.

Goofs

  • In the original version of this cartoon, Jupiter was misspelled as "Jupitep". The future airing is changed to "Indiana". The corrected version of this has "Juptiep" changed to "Indiana." This was also re-animated due to cels. Several banners got added in the corrected version. The original version can be seen on the DVD.
  • Hello Nurse makes a cameo, but in the first shot, her hair is black rather than blonde, like it usually is.
  • Chicken Boo is very clearly labeled as "Chicken Boo" on the news despite being referred to as "Mr. Boo." This goof is ironic considering the failure of Brain's campaign due to being a mouse, as well as Boo's own history of being shunned for not being human.

Smell Ya Later

Animation by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, Ltd.

58-2-SmellYaLater

Plot

Slappy and Skippy face off against Stinkbomb the dog and his grandson Bumpo to get some nuts.

Crew

Trivia

  • Famous comedian Jonathan Winters guest-stars in this cartoon as Stinkbomb.
  • At one point in the cartoon, Skippy says, "Stinkbomb go down the hole" like Baby Plucky in Tiny Toon Adventures. Both characters were voiced by Nathan Ruegger.
  • This is the final cartoon to use the TMS version of her theme song. The rest of the season 1 Slappy cartoons and "Soccer Coach Slappy" would continue to use the StarToons version of her intro. Slappy cartoons from seasons 3-5 would use the Wang-animated Slappy and Skippy intro (expect for "My Mother the Squirrel," "Soccer Coach Slappy," "Bully for Skippy," and "The Christmas Tree").
  • One of these scenes would later be used in the extended intro.

Goofs

  • In the original version, Stinkbomb's doghouse had his name misspelled as "STINKBOMP". This was later corrected, but the original can be seen on the DVD.

Spike

Animation by Akom Film Production

58-spike

Plot

Chicken Boo stars in a parody of Nike sneakers ads.

Crew

Trivia

  • This cartoon is one of Paul Dini's few contributions to Animaniacs.
