Phil Hartman

Philip Edward "Phil" Hartman (September 24, 1948 – May 28, 1998) was a Canadian-American comedian, actor, and screenwriter. He was best known as a recurring cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1986 to 1994, for portraying the character of Bill McNeal on NewsRadio, and for providing various voices on The Simpsons, including Troy McClure, Lionel Hutz, and more. On Animaniacs, he provided one of his distinct voices to the character of Slam Fondlesome in the episode "Broadcast Nuisance", although the character would later be renamed Dan Anchorman.

On May 28, 1998, Hartman was shot dead by his third wife, Brynn Hartman, who then committed suicide not long after. As a result, out of respect, his recurring characters on The Simpsons were retired, and Bill McNeal was written out of NewsRadio via the character dying of a heart attack.
